2011: Favela on Blast

Favela art project in Santa Marta, Rio de Janeiro

If the beginning of 2011 is supposed to set the tone for the rest year, we’re in for a ride of epic proportions. That said, in an effort to expand and slowly reach every corner of the globe, we began dropping lines regarding a search for additional content contributors. We did get some response here and there in the states. Ultimately we decided  to continue our A.D.D. approach to information with coverage from Brazil. Within the next few days  expect to see posts popping up from the favelas in Rio de Janiero. We really don’t know what to expect but when we found out the story behind the video after the jump, we said “We gotta f@#k with this guy.”

“This year, I attended to dj for the event and to tag along with a documentary film crew. While the event itself was amazing, my favorite part came at the end. After the actual contest ended and invited guests had left, some girls were permitted to stay for a little dance party. When the other dj dropped some funk carioca beats, they all started gettin’ downnnnnnn! Every one you see in this video is an inmate and, yes, they are ALL women” ~Tee Cardaci

    greetings, freshly serious fam…

thanks for the intro, S.D.! i'm looking forward to bring you all all that's hot under the brasilain sun in the year to come! first though, i just wanted to give a little more context to the picture and video featured in the post.

the candy-colored pic of favela morro dona marta at the top of the post features the work of my dutch homies, dre & jerun aka haas&hahn and their crew of local painters, 90 Graus. they completed this project after creating their first two favela based projects in vila cruzeiro, all while avoiding the intense heat and the occasional police invasion. total respect to these guys! check them out at favelapainting.com and check out my pics from the day they finished up in dona marta here: http://tiny.cc/glpne

now, the video… without a doubt the craziest dj gig i've ever had! in 20 playing records, i've seen some some shit but…djing in a womans prison in brazil?! nah…i don't think i can top that one. the whole thing was a beauty pageant produced by the prison and the prisoners to help improve self-esteme and moral among the women incarcerated. the woman that won the year before had an ak-47 tattooed across her back. serious. i ended up there with a documentary film crew from new york. to get the permit to film, they had to agree to shoulder some of the responsibility of producing the event. to that end, they recruited me to drop the music cues during the event and to rock a little dance party with a local dj for the girls on good behavior after the main event. that's when i shot this footage. the prisoners were amazing and we had complete freedom to mingle among them and have a chat. i was blown away by their stories as well as their beauty…inner & outer. one cute blonde who was in for international coke smuggling asked me for a cd and i was happy to hook her up. she took it and said, 'cool! your email is on here! i'm supposed to get out in a month, we should hang out!'. i told her my already insanely jealous brazilian girlfriend (at the time) would probably love that ;) what a day…

stay tuned for more brazilan heat…from the penthouses to the favelas, consider me your man in rio de janeiro.

    um grande abraço do brasil–>tee…
