Puzzle Poppin’ en la Favela

Post by Tee Cardaci – Live from Rocinha, Rio de Janeiro / Classic still from ‘City of GodAs we as a culture approach the digital saturation point, the analog and tangible are making a comeback. Ink jets and laser prints are being eschewed for movable type printing presses. Online gaming is being passed up in favor of…puzzles? Well, maybe it hasn’t reached that point yet, but there is one jig-sawed joint that caught our eye recently.

BAAM!! Favela Puzzles, from Rio de Janeiro! If you think of puzzles as something only your grandmother puts together and favelas as being the provence of heavily armed drug gangs as featured in films such as ‘City of God and ’Elite Squad‘, you would be right…partly. This new project, created to raise funds for a children’s art school in one of the biggest favelas in South America, seeks to alter that perception. The four unique puzzles, each featuring a professionally shot view from within the favela of Rocinha (pronounced ho-SEEN-ya), were created to replace the roof of Tio Lino’s Mundo de Arte, badly damaged after recent devastating rain fall in Brazil. The school provides a much need opportunity for the kids of the community to realize their artistic and creative potential while avoiding the temptation to pick up an AK47 and sling powder as a member of the faction that controls their hood. Who new the pedestrian puzzle could be so gangster? FavelaPuzzles.com É isso aí! – Tee

Thank you for promoting this important effort to raise funds for the arts program in Rocinha.

But pardon me if I speak critically of your use of the initial image. This in NO WAY represents the daily life of Rocinha residents. It is not helpful to propogate stereotypes.

But please, go buy a puzzle.

    Jim,

I agree with you that this image does not represent the daily life of the residents of the community. It was an editorial decision made by the editor of Freshly Serious, I assume, to draw more attention to the post. While it was not my idea to use this image, if it helps draw people in to read the article and, in turn, learn more about the community, then I suppose it was worth it. But since you have given me the opportunity to talk about it now, let me say the following….

I am a resident of the community of Rocinha. I know first hand what life is like there. While it is a daily occurrence to see heavily armed young men in the streets, it is also a daily occurrence to see children going to school, people going to and from their jobs, kids playing in the streets and people of all sorts enjoying themselves with their neighbors. The stereotype of the 'favelado', or favela dweller, as a thug, junkie, thief or other low life, is totally and completely false. The stereotype of the favelas as being dangerous places, I would also argue, is a false one, unless you are the police. Rio, as a city, can be a dangerous place. In the favela, however, no crime is tolerated by the faction in control. The community is not without problems however. We are still not without a covered sewer system and the moradores (residents) lack real opportunities and face constant discrimination by those from the 'asfalto', or the flat, paved, wealthier neighborhoods. This is one reason projects like Tio Lino's art school are so important for the community.

Thank you, Jim, for taking the time to write and for making this point.

    regards–>tee…
