In their “Glossary of Dirty South Slang” Rolling Stone Magazine defined Crunk as “to get excited”, Jump a few years later Crunk would be used as a blanket term for a booming new sound that was creeping out of Memphis. Definitive timelines aside, Atlanta’s Westside would start to brew a little sound of it’s own call Snap (or Trap, depending on whose Donkin’ the dopest).
Recently, I chopped it up with Speakerfoxxx over steaming plates curry chicken and cold glasses of freshly made irish moss, covering everything from regional hip hop relations to strip club etiquette. Typical everyday interview questions were bypassed intentionally.
Get Some. Are you Alien? Are you ATL-ien? Naw i’m not an alien like Aleon Craft or Aleon Warr….I’m just a girl with a hustler ambition.I was born at Northside not Grady so I think I’m not a “true ATL-ien” due to that….however the some of the song lyrics that I most identify myself with happen to be in Outkast’s “ATLiens” in the following:
“Softly as if I played piano in the dark Found a way to channel my anger not to embark The world’s a stage and everybody’s got to play their part God works in mysterious ways so when he starts the job of speakin through us we be so sincere with this here No drugs or alcohol so I can get the signal clear as day Put my glock away I got a stronger weapon that never runs out of ammunition so I’m ready for war okay”
Is it fair that much of the non-Atlanta HipHop world has looked down upon Atlanta HipHop (to be fair, Southern HipHop at large, but understood to be heavily epicentered in Atlanta) for producing what they deem to be “garbage” and claiming that Atlanta HipHop is ruining the music? Yes its fair. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. But in the same voice, then they gotta also look down on Bounce music and the history behind the Bounce scene in New Orleans in the same respects. Its existence (both Atlanta hip hop and Bounce) is valid and further i think its ignorant to overlook the correlation between the falling economy and the rising trend of ATL shawty hits that dont focus on serious shit. People dont want to hear that when times are bad. Liquor sales go up while unemployment rises and foreclosures are speading like wildfire. In hard times, people just want to focus on having fun. In some opinions, ATL shawty hits, hood music, trap, snap seems indispensable and cheap. But for the people actually living that life, thats real life–that’s reality. Whether its about strip clubs or hustlin or cookin crack or getting geeked up….the focus should be not on the music itself or the artists–theyre merely players on stage. The debate should be on the poignant focus of the nation–and their use of their dollar–IF you want to even get into that debate. We just livin. Ya’ll just decided to focus on us and your 13yr old kid is downloading our shit on itunes–thats on you. We are going to hustle the shit out of our 15 min, even if its only for 15 min.
Along those lines, what do you think of the whole Soulja Boy // Ice-T beef? Oh i dont focus on shit like that or even invest into it. Most of the time its for publicity and good for them for coming up with it cause you wouldn’t have even asked me and given them attention if they hadnt made it public. Hustle.

No MF DOOM in the mixx? Is Doom Atlanta HipHop, or just a rapper that lives in Atlanta? Yeah Doom is dope. Doom, Madvillian, Viktor Vaughn, Dilla, Prefuse, Madlib, Slum Village…… I was schooled on all that by J$un and I got a lot of appreciation for that subgenre of hip hop. Is it Atlanta hip hop? No…his shit/sound goes beyond the pavement of 285. Atlanta gets more credit and is enriched by having dudes like Doom claim residence here.
It took u 6 six months to put this thing together? Why this amount of time? What was your method for pick the songs u did? Are you going to make the people wait this long for “Dopegirl Anthems” UGH….this amount of time killed me….this shit took forever because I was learning how to make a mixtape during the production of “Dopeboy Anthems”. Thus I had to rely on other people’s schedules and availability to work with me, teach me the foundations. J$oL who I collab’ed with on this project was unavailable a lot because he had just started DJ Union, ATLast Clothing and a video editing company. So yeah it was tough because I have had the vision for this grouping of songs for awhile–probably since I first got Serato from Rob Wonder back in 07 or 08…..I have had a playlist in my itunes labeled “Double Dutch mixtape original” which contains 108 songs of what I wanted my first mixtape to be….the songs I thought were the hottest shit,,,the cream of the crop….i dont dance but these were the songs that if I heard them played out in a club I would start wiling the fuck out…the songs that at some point in my life I related to them when I couldnt relate to anyone else….
Now this grouping of songs kind of best define my style because I’ll almost always resort to touching on at least a few of them in every set I play so I guess that would define a “signature style”. They’re my go-to crate.
Will I make people wait that long for Dopegirl Anthems? No. My aim has been to learn how to do everything solo so I don’t have to rely on anyone else so if it does take another 6 months, its my own damn fault.
What’s your (secret, or maybe not so secret) Trap House alias? Speakerfoxxx? you can put that in whatebver context you want……80% of my friends call me Nylon thanks to Ree instead of Nilan so i just roll with it& keep it moving. My best friend that doesnt live here anymore used to call me Shazzam (don’t tell anyone that though). For a while there Ria Pell and others called me “Trouble” cause I was trouble and people still call me Double Dutch but nah I dont have any aliases
Did you ever get a chance to “make it rain” on a chick at Body Tap? Naw…..but i have at Kamal’s, Pin-Ups, Strokers and Onyx….my best friend is going to be running shit at the old Body Tap (now Diamonds of Atlanta) when it reopens and she offered me a weekly there so maybe the girls working there will make it rain on me since I’ll be playing their shit
Crime Mob’s Diamond or Princess?
Diamond!! “We knuckin and buckin cuz I got a nine I blow you away cuz you wastin my time Stupid ass niggas I know what to do I waste yo ass you step to my crew ‘m through wit you haters so watch what you do You talkin bout me then I’m talkin to you You buckin on us and we leave you in plastic You buckin on me and that shit gone get nasty I’m colder than ice and I’m freezing off heads I shot at yo city but you cannot tell”
That verse–FIRE!!!What kind of candy do you like? Dont really fuck with candy. I like peanut butter cookies.
FINI
