The Original #Graffiti King: Vaughn Bode

Issue #1 of The Cheech Wizard comic bookIn 2011 it’s safe to say that a good portion of our readers have no idea as to who or what Vaughn Bode is. Then there’s that 5% of our audience; the truly enlightened that know what time it is. For the curious, Vaughn Bode was 60s era underground comic illustrator, and the mind behind one of the biggest influences on graffiti culture to this day, The Cheech Wizard. [Read more...]

Art in the Streets Exhibition @MOCA

APRIL 17–AUGUST 8, 2011 / THE GEFFEN CONTEMPORARY AT MOCA

The Museum of Contemporary Art presents Art in the Streets, the first major U.S. museum exhibition of the history of graffiti and street art. The exhibition will trace the development of graffiti and street art from the 1970s to the global movement it has become today, concentrating on key cities where a unique visual language or attitude has evolved. Following MOCA’s presentation, the exhibition will travel to the Brooklyn Museum, where it will be on view March 30–July 8, 2012.

Art in the Streets will showcase installations by 50 of the most dynamic artists from the graffiti and street art community, including Fab 5 Freddy (New York), Lee Quiñones (New York), Futura (New York), Margaret Kilgallen (San Francisco), Swoon (New York), Shepard Fairey (Los Angeles), Os Gemeos (São Paulo), and JR (Paris). MOCA’s exhibition will emphasize Los Angeles’s role in the evolution of graffiti and street art, with special sections dedicated to cholo graffiti and Dogtown skateboard culture. The exhibition will feature projects by influential local artists such as Craig R. Stecyk III, Chaz Bojórquez, Dr. Dax, Mister Cartoon, RETNA, SABER, REVOK, and RISK. [Read more...]

Roger Gastman: Graffiti Gasping

In the first issue of his graffiti and pop-culture magazine While You Were Sleeping, Roger Gastman thanked “Mom for the loot,” and then thanked “everyone who ever told me that graff was a dumb waste of my time.” Gastman, who was 19 at the time, had already been running a graffiti supply business in Bethesda, Md., for three years and was starting to assemble a valuable collection of graffiti ephemera, sourcing discontinued Krylon paint colors at mom-and-pop hardware stores as though he knew, even as a teen, that his obsession would serve him well. Basquiat x Rammelzee Download

After a recent encounter with the film Radiant Child this post is well deserved. Radiant Child is more or less the bio / autobio of Jean Michel Basquiat. Built on the foundation of a rare  interview that director and friend Tamra Davis shot with Basquiat over twenty years ago, it’s pretty in depth and highly recommened.

The film touched briefly on Basquait’s often over looked contributions to music. The ever experimenting artist, he was often involved with experimental bands or music projects. None of which could ever rival his success in the art world, but at the time it didn’t matter. The image above is the cover art for one of those projects. Full download after the jump. [Read more...]
